Excerpts of Significance

"In fact, "atheism" is a term that should not even exist. No one ever needs to identify himself as a "non-astrologer" or a "non-alchemist." We do not have words for people who doubt that Elvis is still alive or that aliens have traversed the galaxy only to molest ranchers and their cattle. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs."
— Sam Harris (Letter to a Christian Nation)

"grow in any dimension and pain as well as joy will be your reward. a full life will be full of pain. elect life and growth and you elect change and the prospect of death. the woman described elected a living death without risk or challenge. i have said that the the attempt to avoid all legitimate suffering lies at the root of all emotional illness. most people, whether young or old have a problem facing the reality of death. if we can live with death, death can be our ally, still fearsome but a source of wise counsel.
with constant awareness of the limit of our time to live and love we can live life to the fullest but if we are unwilling to face death we deprive ourselves of it's counsel and cannot live with clarity. when we shy away from death, the ever changing nature of things, we shy away from life."

We fight against our own experience. We run from pieces of ourselves. Let us call this mental habit 'rejecting'. Between these two reactions lies the neutral box. Here we place the experiences which are neither good nor bad. They are tepid, neutral, uninteresting and boring. We pack experience away in the neutral box so that we can ignore it and thus return our attention to where the action is, namely our endless round of desire and aversion. This category of experience gets robbed of its fair share of our attention. Let us call this mental habit 'ignoring'. The direct result of all this lunacy is a perpetual treadmill race to nowhere, endlessly pounding after pleasure, endlessly fleeing from pain, endlessly ignoring 90 percent of our experience. Than wondering why life tastes so flat. In the final analysis, it's a system that does not work.

"Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It's a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity." Pema Chödrön
